Originally launched in 1911 as a symbol of resilience and renewal after the 1906 earthquake, the Carnival made a triumphant return in 2022 to mark a fresh beginning after the pandemic. Since then, it has become a beloved summer tradition, drawing thousands to the heart of Hayes Valley each year.

This free, community-focused celebration features performances by Circus Bella, founded by Abigail Munn, director and ringmaster. She collaborates with Hayes Valley’s own Autumn Adamme on the costume design each year and costumes are sewn and sequined by the team at Dark Garden.

The afternoon will have prizes and lively games—hosted by Fiddlesticks.

Come hungry! There are delicious offerings from local restaurants and food vendors. Be sure to look out for hot dogs from Hayz Dog.

The Circus Bella stage is at PROXY, the outdoor public space at the intersection Hayes and Octavia Streets. Games and other events are set up in the Shared Streets spaces on Hayes Street and Patricia’s Green.

The nearest public transit options are:

  • BART is Civic Center / UN Plaza

  • Muni underground, use Van Ness Station

  • Streetcar F Market Street at Gough

  • Muni bus lines are the 21 Hayes & 5 McAllister

Street parking is extremely limited. The closest paid parking is the Performing Arts Garage at 360 Grove St, San Francisco (Note that as of June, there are no afternoon performances at nearby venues, though both Davies Symphony Hall and SFJazz have 8pm shows on July 19th.)

The porta-lets will be set up on Linden Street, between Octavia and Gough.
